It was January of 2017 and I, like many people, made a New Year’s Resolution. That resolution was to lose weight that I had put on in the off season of work. I was 30 pounds heavier than I wanted to be and knew I had to change my life and eating habits to help shave off those pounds. (Spoiler alert: I lost those 30 pounds in 1 and a half months) Exercise is important but without a good foundation of diet, I knew it would all be in vain. So after a bunch of research I decided on a slightly drastic diet to make the change that I needed. That change was something I inherently knew would help but never knew how to implement.
The Ketogenic (Keto) Diet is essentially removing most carbohydrates from what you eat and replacing it with a high fat, yes fat, and protein based diet. It sounds crazy, I know, I was skeptical too. I had a hard time believing it too but based on the research I knew it worked. For so long we are told that fat is bad but what we are not told is that fat is mostly bad in conjunction with carbs and the sugars that come along with that. So I dove in and bought everything I would need for the transition (which wasn’t much).
My Shopping list:
1. Coconut Oil
3. Everything else I normally bought sans anything with carbs (read the nutrition labels!!)
It was surprisingly easy to transition to Keto. Most of what I already ate was part of Keto. Cheeses, vegetables, meats and eggs become some of your best friends. Of course you must start omitting breads, pastas, rices and high starch foods like potatoes. The best way I found was to replace those high carb foods with an extra helping of vegetables. Sandwiches become lettuce wraps, tacos are taco salads, and curry with rice is just curry over a healthy bed of broccoli. Also on Keto don’t be afraid to use butter, oils, and salts to add extra flavor to those vegetables. The fat and salt will be beneficial to maintaining energy levels.
